How to ensure safe software downloads?
This is with special reference to the software called Audacity, used for music manipulation. People say it’s really good, but I’ve also read that spyware etc. can attach itself to many software downloads. And I haven’t heard of Audacity that much, so I don’t know if I can trust it. Is there any way to make sure?
The “home” of Audacity is Source Forge which is a well respected and trusted site for downloading. I’d be very surprised if you downloaded something from Source Forge and found it had a virus in it.
That said, you are wise to consider the safety of downloading. There are various sites that no one would argue over the safety of and I have links to some of those sites in my profile. It’s not an exhaustive list, just a few I could come up with at the time that are reputable.
When looking for one of those sites and you can’t quite remember the address, always google it – Source Forge is sourceforge.net and if anyone ever took out sourceforge.org, that could be a dangerous site. (For all I know, Source Forge may own that name – download.com were smart and bought downloadS.com as well which means no one can use that name to pretend to be them and hand out shonky software.) The price of domain names is low enough that it’s worth it to people to set up a fake organisation and buy a .org domain name – people think all .org sites are safe but I’ve seen some that are nothing but spam and one that even had pornography and dangerous downloads.
